Why are fixtures in big stores cheaper then my contractors selection?
Fun Fact: I did not know there was a difference before I started working in this industry, and I’m sure I am not alone. When you find yourself in the midst of a remodel and are shopping name brand stores like Lowes or Home Depot, you may notice the faucet on the shelf is priced significantly less then your contractors selection. Even being the same model the price can be an alarming difference to those who are unaware of why that is.
When looking at fixtures there are 2 different types to consider. Those on shelves at Brand name stores (builder-grade/retail-grade) and those sold to contractors direct from plumbing suppliers (contractor-grade). Why are there 2 different kinds? Well, in the end of the day it all comes down to the same thing, price.
What’s the difference?
Plumbing fixtures found on the shelves of big brand stores have less durable components to them then contractor-grade.
The quality of the materials used inside the plumbing fixtures is the biggest difference between the 2. Both types are the same, Exactly the same in every way except one Significant difference. The retail-grade mechanical pieces are made with plastic and the contractor-grade are made with metal (usually brass or stainless steel). If you were too pickup both grades of faucets, you would feel a major weight difference with the higher quality contractor-grade being much heavier. And quality equals durability.
The internal mechanics of the faucet is what is doing all the leg work for your fixture. It works the hardest and is what will need to be repaired and replaced when time and use takes it toll. Because of the lesser quality of mechanics, retail-grade tends to wear our and need attention sooner than contractor-grade fixtures.
Many of the well known Plumbing Fixtures Manufacturers purposely make different versions (or grades) of their products at different price points. There are A & B grade versions, sometimes that rating will appear on the box or in the model number. If you see the same fixture at 2 different price points, check the model or part numbers. Those numbers will be slightly different but that will denote the difference in quality and durability, which is what determines the price.
