Comparing the similarities and differences between MDF cabinets and Wood cabinets.
Almost one hundred and four years ago (to the day) The Great Debate was held between two astronomers about the size of the universe. What does that have to do with this blog? Nothing, besides the name.
Medium density fiberboard cabinets (MDF) and solid wood cabinets has been a contention for Kitchen designers for a long time now. The Great Debate. But why? What are they and how do they differ? Follow along below for Today’s blog where we will break down the definition, strengths and weaknesses of these styles of cabinet doors.
What Are MDF Cabinet Doors?
If you scrolled to the headline then you missed it in the paragraph before. MDF cabinets stand for Medium Density Fiberboard. Often referred to as “Engineered wood”, they are crafted from a wood composite consisting of leftover wood fibers. These fibers combine with resin and wax under high pressure and heat, forming a dense and stable material.
Because it is engineered, MDF has a uniform density and smooth, grainless surface. This makes it ideal for painting doors. MDF tends to be more affordable because its wood fibers come from hardwood and softwood waste products. To produce MDF kitchen cabinet doors, the panels are cut into the desired shapes and assembled into door frames. Afterward, the doors undergo additional treatments like painting or staining.
Why Use MDF Cabinet Doors?
There are many of advantages to using MDF Cabinet doors. To start, it won’t crack or chip. Solid wood doors, with expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, MDF being engineered remains in stasis throughout temperature changes.
These engineered surfaces are also free of any blemishes that may occur within a solid wood material leaving a nice finished smooth surface. Not to mention, MDF cabinet doors are much more affordable and are available in a variety of styles and edge profiles that solid wood just does not offer. But that’s not even the biggest advantage…
The biggest advantage is painted cabinets. MDF being engineered with a smooth finish and resistant to expanding and contracting, finished smooth with any paint you choose. The engineered surface will not show the cracks like solid wood does pictured below.
What Are Wood Cabinet Doors?
Solid wood cabinets, revered for their authentic charm, are a premium alternative to MDF cabinet doors. Crafted entirely from, well just pick a tree, they showcase the inherent characteristics of nature in all her beauty and flaws.
Solid wood cabinets’ unique grain patterns, textures, and colors mean there is a choice for every home style, even if you prefer a more laid back look. You also have a wide range of options from painting to staining to help you add your own unique touch.
While they do cost more than their MDF counterparts, solid wood’s timeless aesthetic and customization give you the bang for your buck you expect. Solid wood cabinets, especially hardwood species, are also very strong and durable compared to MDF.
Which Is Right For Me?
Choosing between MDF vs. wood cabinets ultimately comes down to your preferences, budget, and priorities. MDF cabinets offer affordability, versatility, and a smooth finish. They are an excellent choice if you are on a tighter budget or seeking modern and customizable designs. But if durability is your biggest concern, they might not be right for you.
Wood cabinets, with their timeless beauty, natural aesthetics, and unmatched durability, will appeal to you if you want long-lasting quality. They offer similar levels of customization and are perfect if your kitchen has a traditional, transitional, or rustic vibe. Also solid wood cabinets can significantly increase your property’s value, while MDF cabinets may decrease it. Once again, this shows that the higher price of solid wood more than pays for itself.
