What’s The Difference: Major Brands Shower Glass, or The G2 Suggested Brand?

A bathroom isn’t just a bathroom anymore. They are now a fortified sanctuary, the last line of defense in privacy against everyday life. When it comes to redesigning your bathroom you’d want your place of solace to transition into a home retreat as seamlessly as possible. The shower, and for the context of this article the shower glass, plays a key role in the overall look and feel of this transformation.

You’re reading this because you know you want a glass shower, but trying to decide if you should go with the glass G2 offers, or purchase a brand from a major retail chain. Well, I’m here to break down the reasons on why you should go with us, so without further-ado…

Major Brands Shower Glass

Big retail chains such as Home Depot or Lowes carry brands like; Delta, Kohler, Vigo and many more. These brands are never a bad option for DIY and are highlighted by the sprawling varieties to choose from when faced with them. However, they aren’t without their flaws. As any product that is produced in mass, corners are cut, customization is minimal and limitations are present.

Leading retailers will usually only offer glass that is 3/16 of an inch thick. This making the glass much more feasible and more likely for damage to incur. Even if a thicker glass is available it usually needs to be special ordered from the manufacture.

Next is the “Standard clear” option offered. Standard clear glass isn’t totally clear. You might notice a slight green tint to the glass or green edges. The green tint becomes even more prominent when looking at an angle and gets darker as glass thickness increases. The green tint is due to the natural presence of iron oxide from elements such as sand, or from the cask or container in which the glass was melted.

Finally, the biggest issue I find with major brand glass is the lack of customization. By this I mean the door size. Measure CAREFULLY when selecting a shower door, wait until all the shower finishings are completed. Because Major Brands glass is cut to specific sizes and are not made to be incorporated with any design, the design revolves around the glass not the glass with the design.

G2’s Shower Glass

Being a small business ourselves we believe in supporting local businesses that produce a high quality product. That is why for our shower glass we use the company “My Shower Door.” My Shower Door is a Florida owned family business that is one of the prominent leaders in shower glass in the State! Having been involved in the frameless shower door industry since the ‘80s, they have revolutionized the design and installation of shower door products.

My Shower Doors, being a shower glass specialist, Offers glass in a range of sizes from 1/2 an inch to 3/8. We suggest staying within this range because the glass is much sturdier with the edges having a finer finish to them. Next, is the options available in the look of the glass, either Standard (green tint) or My Shower Glass has an “Ultra-Clear” option.

Now they are not the only ones too have this option, other major brands do as well but, what distinguishes My Shower Door is the process in which their Ultra-Clear glass is made. First, Ultra-Clear Glass is a low iron product that minimizes the green hue while having a crystal-clear appearance. Their Ultra-Clear Glass takes into account where the sand is cultivated, how much iron is in the sand to begin with and much, much more. To learn about their whole process you can go to their website here.

Finally, The big Reason is My Shower Door’s Glass is able to be customized to fit any design the bathroom has. Of course careful measurements need to be done, just like any project but no longer does the entirety of the shower need to be built around the frame of the glass. My Shower Doors allow for more breathing room in the design and installation process.

In Conclusion…

Whatever you choose, whether a major brand or G2’s selection of Shower Glass, consult with your designer to address any of your needs. And if you’re going the DIY route, we suggest consulting with a professional before any shower glass installation. Some Forms of glass and frame designs require extra permits depending on where your project is being done.
